Race Info:

North Penn IRON Knights Elementary Triathlon

Saturday May 18, 2024 at North Penn High School

Rain date - Sunday, May 19th, 2024

Times:

Grades K,1,2.......... First start time - 8:00am

Grades 3 and 4.......First start time -TBD

Grades 5 and 6.......First start time -TBD

*Report to NPHS gym at least ½ hour prior to your designated start time.......

*The transition area opens 1 hour prior to the first start time and closes promptly 5 minutes before the first starting time.

Supervision:

*All participants must have a parent present at the race

*Only K, 1 and 2 participants will be allowed one parent helper in the bike transition area

*Helmets are a must and state law requires helmets to be worn PROPERLY anytime a child is on a bike

*Sneakers and Race Bibs must be worn for bicycling and running

*Parents are present to cheer their child on and not to give them a competitive advantage

Check-in Procedures Prior to Event:

*All participants are required to pick up their race bibs/t-shirt/giveaways/info packet at the

*Penndale Gymnasium on May 15th, 2024 from 6-9pm. Locate your table by school.

There are approximately 500 racers in each division and 10 racers starting at a time. Racers will be given a designated start time/ window for the race. Some racers may have a start time up to 1 ½ hours after the first start time. The timing company will calculate the times evenly so it is the same for all racers.

Race Day Check in:

*Check in will be located in the parking lot at the far end of the NPHS parking lot.

*Report to check in 1 hour prior to the first start time of your age group as listed above. Show your RACE BIB. You will get your arm and leg marked.

*At this time you may place your equipment in the transition area (bike, helmet, sneakers, towel, etc.). There will not be a bike or helmet inspection. You are responsible to make sure your bike and helmet are safe to compete. You will not be allowed in the transition area until you have checked in.

SWIMMING:

*Participants must report to the gym at least 30 minutes before their individual race times.

*Swimmers will be organized first in the gym, then escorted into the pool by the order they will start (determined by race number- the last number of the racer's number is their lane assignment. i.e. #467 swims in Lane 7, #1020 swims in lane 10, etc)

By race organizers:

*Parents will be allowed in the pool area grandstands to view participants but will be sectioned off from racers. Please DO NOT stand along the railing during the race. Security guards will enforce this.

*Goggles, kickboards and swim caps are optional.

*Parents and racers will exit the pool area using different doors.

*Swimmers will be called down to the pool in groups, enter the pool, hang on the wall and await a start signal from race officials. Racers will swim straight across to the other side. Each racer will need to touch the wall on the other side of the pool with his/her hand.

*K, 1 and 2 will do one lap. Grades 3 and 4 will do 3 laps. Grades 5 and 6 will do 5 laps.

*All racers will exit on the opposite side of the pool from the stands.

*Parents must exit the pool from the doors located next to the stands. They will not be permitted down on the pool deck.

*Stress to your athlete to be careful when exiting the pool in bare feet. Running will not be permitted from the pool to the transition area.

TRANSITION AREA:

*Each racer in K-4 will have his/her own area marked with their race number by race officials. 5-6 grades will choose their own stalls. All Grades will have their transition area in the NPHS Parking Lot in their designated areas.

*K,1 and 2 may have one parent assist with getting on clothing, sneakers and helmets.

*You will need to pin your child's race bib on the front of his/her t-shirt PRIOR to the event.
This is the shirt he/she will wear when riding their bikes and running. The race bib is only worn during biking and running NOT swimming. The race bib contains a microchip used for timing so please DON"T LOSE IT.

*Your child may not mount his/her bike until he/she is out of the transition area.

*PRE-RACE CHECKLIST FOR TRANSITION AREA:

  1. Bike and helmet labeled with your last name
  2. 2 towels-one to stand on-one to dry yourself with.
  3. Sneakers and socks
  4. A t-shirt with race bib attached with safety pins
  5. Water bottle-no glass please

BIKING:

  • The course has many straight-aways and curves. When passing another biker, pass on the left and say "passing on the left". Try not to pass on curves and turns. Do not tailgate or draft another rider.
  • K,1,2 will go around the course once and then return their bike to their stall.
  • 3 and 4 will go around three times. After the completion of each lap, ALL PARTICIPANTS WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR COUNTING THEIR OWN LAPS. Hand marking WILL NOT occur this year. Racers are electronically timed and counted for their bike laps. If racers do not complete the number of laps they are assigned, a penalty will be added to their finishing time. Return your bike to your stall.
  • 5 and 6 will follow the same procedure but complete 5 laps.
  • The entrance and exit of the transition area is the same for both running and biking.

 

RUNNING:

  • All runners will run towards the football field and finish under the arch in the stadium.
  • Parents may view runners from the stands. They will not be allowed on the track surface or along the fence.
  • Runners are asked to pass other runners on the left.
  • The running surface will be black top and the high school track surface.
  • There will be a finish arch to mark the end of the race. Run through the arch where you will be awarded your medal. Please go immediately up into the stands to meet your parents.
  • 1st, 2nd and 3rd place award ceremonies will start soon after the last participant in each level finishes.

 

GENERAL INFO:

K,1,2.......... swim 20 yards(1 lap).........bike 1 mile.........run .5 mile

3 and 4..........swim 60 yards(3 laps).........bike 3 miles( laps)..........run .75 mile

5 and 6..........swim 100 yards(5 lap)..........bike 5 miles( laps).........run 1 mile

Timing will be done by a professional company.

Ask a volunteer for help at any time. They will be on the course wearing an official volunteer IRONKnights Shirt. All participants and families must listen to race volunteers at all times. They are there for your child's safety.

No headphones, iPods or electronic devices are allowed during the triathlon.

Parking:

Entrance to NPHS will be done ONLY from Valley Forge Rd. There are over 700 parking spots available. Please drive slowly as there will be children everywhere. Handicap parking is located nearest to the high school main entrance. A valid handicap plate or hanging tag is required. DO NOT PARK IN THE GRASS FOR ANY REASON.

All racers must meet in the NPHS Gym at least 30 minutes prior to your race start time for pre-race instructions.

Bad weather:

If inclement weather is forecasted, the rain date may be utilized. The decision will be made no later than 10pm the night before the race. In the event of lightning, the race will be suspended and resumed once the lightning has passed.

The entire course is off limits to motor vehicles with the exception of emergency vehicles. Please obey all signs, fencing, and coned off areas for the safety of our participants.

*Things to remember**

Bike, goggles, helmet, 2 towels, sneakers, socks, race bib, shorts, t-shirt, swimsuit, snacks, water...label everything
